Blueprint of a Champion

Showmanship can be difficult if you don’t know what you’re doing. I’m here to help with that.

Eye Contact

Eye Contact

Eye contact is key when you are in the ring. If you do not look at the judge, you are looking at points being deducted, and your chances of making it into the final drive begin to dwindle. Judges love to be looked at, and if they don't catch your eyes, they'll assume you care little about what you are there to do.

Feet Placement

Feet Placement

Feet placement is essential in showmanship. The judge will give you five seconds to step into place and get that animal presented, but that doesn't mean you can slack off with that calf's feet. If your calf isn't set square (ex., how mine is in the photo), more points will be deducted. You HAVE to make sure your calf is set right and presentable.

Presenting

Presenting Yourself

When in the ring for showmanship, you must focus on how you present yourself. Your posture must be locked in, your stance must not appear lazy, and your transitions must be steady and confident. When the judge is in front of the calf, you move off to the side to allow for a better look. When the judge is on your side, you must stand almost in front of the calf as the photo entails. Do not move too fast, but do not falter. A good showman shows no nervousness; they only show how badly they want to win.
